Downstream products of furfural

2023 04/14

Furfural is known as furfural formaldehyde, artificial ant oil, scorched aldehyde, etc. It is a chemical raw material made from corncobs, cotton seeds, rice husks, bagasse and other agricultural by-products containing pentosan, which are hydrolyzed. Furfural is a raw material for the preparation of many medicines and industrial products, and is widely used in pesticides, medicines, fuels, coatings, resins and other industries.

Furfural/tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol: At present, more than half of furfural is used to produce furfuryl alcohol, and 80-90% of furfuryl alcohol is used to produce furan resin. Furfural undergoes polycondensation reaction with formaldehyde, urea, phenol, etc. in the presence of an acidic catalyst to produce various grades of furan resins. Furan resins can be used as foundry adhesives, casting mastics, core molds and casting molds. In addition, a certain amount of furan resin is also added to the glass fiber reinforced plastic silicon filled plastic and anti-corrosion mortar. A small amount of furfural is used in the production of high temperature resistant phenolic resin adhesives for friction wheels. For example: brake pads for automobiles, etc. In addition, furfural is also an intermediate in the production of spices, fragrances, medicines, and pesticides. Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, another downstream product of furfural, is mainly used as a special solvent and chemical intermediate, such as pesticide solvent, industrial and household cleaning agent, degreasing agent, etc. Its acrylate can be used as a reactive monomer for unsaturated polyester, and its latest use is to configure cleaning agents in the electronics industry. This will become the field with the fastest growing market demand for tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol in the future.
